Day 2 – CULT: The issue of digitization of education in EU and its consequences for the students

The committee of CULT has been examining the ways that would make the adaptation of education in the digital era possible without insulting at the same time the equality between the students from all over the EU. The MEPs admitted that the fast development of new technologies creates the need of an evolution in education too. The problem is located  in different situations that exist in each nation of EU and especially in different chances that students have because of the economic situation of each nation.

Most of the speakers pointed out that students need to get used with basic technological knowledge from the early beginning of their education because in this way they will be more prepared about the needs of labor market which demands nowadays people with more technical abilities than in the past.In order this purpose to be fulfilled, a better communication between students and teachers is required and simultaneously the fear of new technologies, known as the “technophobia”, has to be eliminated. One member especially mentioned the example of Greece where the doubts about digitization are not a few.
After that and as everyone agreed in the importance of digitization the procedure stopped because of a sudden problem in the electronic system. Attempts were made to fix this issue and then the procedure continued. In this point of the discussion all the MEPs talked about the need of the protection of students from the multiple dangers of  the extreme use of new technologies. There were references about increased protection of personal data and campaigns against cyber bullying.In the end, they all agreed that understanding the problem is the first step in order to deal with it and that teaching the students new technologies and creating personal relationships with them could give a solution in the adaptation of digital era in education of EU. This session come to an end after that.
